I’m going to classify this week’s Comedian You Should Know, Sarah Millican, as an up-and-coming comedian. She’s already making a good name for herself and she’s been around a few years, and though she’s on the cusp of being huge, she not there quite yet. So pay attention to these clips and you can be one of the ones to say, “Oh yeah, I knew about her before she got really big.” Then you can feel like a smug hipster.
She may look sweet and innocent, but I assure you it’s just a clever ploy to lull you into a false sense of security that it will be an evening of family entertainment. Oh, but she’ll fool you! This Geordie lass talks about dirty, dirty things in such a way you’ll say, “ooh, isn’t that sw- whoa, did she just say ‘fanny’?”
This clip is a pretty good introduction to who she is and what she’s about. As I’ve said above, don’t be fooled. Adult language and themes abound!
As a single woman, there may or may not be unhealthy attachment feelings there. Especially towards pets. Millican is a self-confessed “hamster squeezer” as you’ll see below:
Now she’s got a boyfriend, she’s back to engaging in sexy times and sexy talk. And sometimes there are misunderstandings:
Here’s her full set from “Live at the Apollo” where she covers a lot. Topics like living alone, the care and maintenance of boyfriends, the lack of realism in greeting cards, what women would do if they were men for a day and the amorous advances of Mr. Kipling:
Millican is making quite a name for herself on the panel game circuit, too. She’s been on “Mock the Week” and “8 Out of 10 Cats” (among others) but one of my favorites of her appearances is this clip from “Would I Lie To You?” where she tries to throw off the other team with her story of riding the Asda (Wal-Mart in the UK) customer service shuttle all day. Is it true or a lie? You’ll have to watch to find out!
One of her more recent projects is “Sarah Millican’s Support Group” on BBC Radio 4. She played off her relationship comedy into sort of being a modern day agony aunt (think “Dear Abby” but younger, hipper and naughtier). I missed the first series, but I’m looking forward to catching the second series, which has been commissioned. Here’s the BBC Comedy promo for the first series:
She’s still a rising star in Britain, so the best we can do for more Sarah Millican is search YouTube for any appearances. She’s scheduled to release her first comedy DVD in November 2011, but I’m nearly 100% certain that will be Region 2 only, like everyone else’s comedy DVDs seem to be. But since she is on the rise, it’s only a matter of time before she’ll have lots more YouTube stuff for us non-Brits to enjoy.

- Video: Trapped in her bra. On her Twitter feed, #BRT (bra removal time) is a common hashtag. It usually occurs while I’m still at work (damn that 7 hour time difference!) so I can’t participate. #BRT is also usually accompanied by sound effects. :D
- Audio: “Keeping Your Chins Up” – Sarah’s self-penned first foray into radio. Part one, part two, part three, part four.
WereGeek
WereGeek is reading 5-7 books at any given time, none of them very fast. These can range from alternative universe fiction to historical non-fiction and from theoretical physics to Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. You can argue with her all you want, but Dirk Benedict will always be her Starbuck. Her ringtone is the theme from Airwolf and she believes that there's nothing that can't be improved by the judicious application of werewolves. Or bacon. Or werewolves with bacon. She can be contacted at werewolf17 @ gmail.com and followed on Twitter at the link below.
