If you’re looking for an excuse to rewatch Firefly (or to introduce someone to the series), Ovation TV is going to air the series in a glorious, week-long run! Here’s their press release:
SANTA MONICA – December 15, 2010: Ovation, the only multi-platform network dedicated to art and contemporary culture, is bringing a cult classic back to television. Firefly, the Award-winning series from acclaimed writer/director Joss Whedon (creator of hits Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel), will kick off a week-long, limited run on Ovation beginning January 3.
Each night, three full episodes will air during primetime, beginning at 8.00 p.m. ET/5.00 p.m. PT with an encore presentation at 11.00 p.m. ET/8.00 p.m. PT. A Firefly marathon will run all day on Ovation on Saturday, January 8.
Starring Nathan Fillion (ABC’s Castle) and Summer Glau (The Cape, Dollhouse), Firefly has won numerous awards, including the 2003 Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Effects in a television series and SyFy Genre Award for Best Television Series. The series premiered in 2002 on FOX and quickly formed a cult following, which led Whedon and Universal Pictures to produce the feature film, Serenity. The franchise also developed into a comic series and role-playing video game.
Firefly is an American space western television series set in the year 2517 and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The series explores the lives of some people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of the society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. Ovation TV can be found on DirecTV (channel 274), Dish Network (channel 157), and on various cable providers, so check your local listings to find out if you get Ovation. You can find out more about the network by visiting http://www.OvationTV.com.

Not sure what to get the geek in your life for the holidays? Looking for things to add to your own geeky list for Santa? Fear not, for The Discriminating Fangirl has got you covered! Every day in December up to Christmas Eve, we’ll be posting a new geeky gift idea!
Firefly: The Complete Series

I see Firefly as sort of a gateway drug for introducing someone to science fiction television. They might balk at Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica, but Firefly is approachable, well-made, and funny enough to appeal to even the most ardent anti-nerd. Case in point: a former coworker always scorned the rest of us for quoting Star Wars and Star Trek at work, but once someone showed him Firefly, he loved it and started heading down the nerdy path.
Five hundred years in the future there’s a whole new frontier, and the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity is eager to stake a claim on the action. They’ll take any job, legal or illegal, to keep fuel in the tanks and food on the table. But things get a bit more complicated after they take on a passenger wanted by the new totalitarian Alliance regime. Now they find themselves on the run, desperate to steer clear of Alliance ships and the flesh-eating Reavers who live on the fringes of space. (from Amazon)

Nathan Drake thinks this news sucks, too. Did you hear that sound, fangirls and fanboys? That was the sound of my little Nathan Drake fangirl heart breaking.
Actually, it was the sound of me shouting, “NO! GODDAMMIT!” when I read that Mark Wahlberg has confirmed that he’s playing my beloved treasure hunter in the upcoming film adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
You might remember that I was rooting for Nathan Fillion because honestly, he’s perfect for the role. He’s got the charm, the snark, the ability to look vulnerable while still kicking ass.
I’m not really a fan of Mark Wahlberg. Sure, back when I was twelve years old and he was “rapping” and dropping his pants on stage, I thought he was pretty cute. But he hasn’t impressed me at all with his acting chops, and for fuck’s sake, people, am I the only one who remembers The Happening?
I just cannot see the guy playing Nathan Drake. I can see him butchering the lines and looking pissy the entire time, but I can’t imagine he’ll be good at it.
Or maybe I’m overreacting a bit, heh. I’ll say now, if Wahlberg is good in the role, I’ll happily eat crow. But… I don’t have my hopes up. Not at all, especially after reading these quotes from our articulate actor:
“David is one of the best writer/directors I’ve ever worked with,” Wahlberg told MTV. “The idea that he has is just insane. So hopefully we’ll be making that movie this summer.”
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Walhberg also confirmed rumors that Russell is writing roles for acting heavies (and “Goodfellas” costars) Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. “I’m obviously in whatever David wants to do, but the idea of it is so off the charts: De Niro being my father, Pesci being my uncle. It’s not going to be the watered-down version, that’s for sure.”
WHAT.
I’m sorry… WHAT?! What watered down version? The video game’s storyline wasn’t exciting enough, so we have to fuck with it and jazz it up? With Joe Pesci?
Again, maybe I’m overreacting, but… maybe I’m not. I’m so afraid this movie adaptation is going to be a clusterfuck of massive proportions.

For my fellow NaNoWriMo participants, I give you our favorite, geeky, adorable, fictional author doing what we’re all going to be doing feverishly throughout November:

Write away, my fellow fangirls (and fanboys)!

Our darling Captain Tightpants has expressed his interest a few days ago in playing scruffy adventurer Nathan Drake in the upcoming film adaptation of the wildly popular video game series Uncharted.
I say, make it so, fangirls (and fanboys). Our lovely Mr. Fillion is perfect for the part, IMO. He scruffs up nicely, he cracks wise with the best of them, and… well, I’ve wanted Nathan as Indiana Jones forever, and this is probably the closest I’ll get to it. Retweet like mad. Release the hounds. All that. Let’s make this guy:

into this guy:

Oh hell, let’s have another pic of Nathan to start the day off right:
