Fangirl Weekly: Feb 21-27, 2011
Did you miss something on The Discriminating Fangirl last week? That’s okay, it happens to the best of us. Oh, and I decided Monday would be a better day to recap the past week. I’m totally not late with this or anything.

We only love Ewoks when they're cute and cuddly. Oh, wait...

TDF Pamela reviewed Aftertime by Sophie Littlefield
Excerpt: I like apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic novels (and movies and video games…). There’s something compelling about what life would be like after the end, something frightening and fascinating all at the same time. Aftertime is a fine entry into the genre, blending zombie horror seamlessly with a very human, emotional story.…
There are some exciting sequences where they’re desperately trying to escape certain death, but that’s not the point of Aftertime. The point is, for me anyway, that even when it seems like you can’t go on, you can always find strength to overcome those obstacles.
WereGeek recapped and reviewed Being Human (UK) s03e01 “Lia”
Excerpt: Hooray! The lovely people at the BBC and BBC America have taken pity on us poor Americans and aren’t making us wait a year or more for the new series of Being Human to cross the pond! We’re only a month behind now, with episode five airing over there the same week episode one airs here! That’s progress, my friend! Not enough progress, as they showed they can do same night transmissions like they did with Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol and the BAFTAS just this month, but I’m not going to complain. Still better than what it used to be!

LadyT reviewed Eat Me! by Xanthe Milton
Excerpt: There are few things currently more painfully trendy than a fussy little gourmet cupcake. You know them, you’ve seen them, people are obsessed with them and bakeries everywhere are rubbing their hands in glee because they can charge a fortune for them compared to the same amount of regular sheet cake. It’s pretty much a win/win for the bakeries, but a little less so for the crafty geek short on pocket change but hankering for treats.Obvious answer, of course: Make your own. There are shelves and shelves of recipe books dedicated to the humble cupcake and seemingly everyone has an opinion on how to do it properly. My favourite of these offerings however (and trust me, I have read a few), is Eat Me! The Stupendous, Self-Raising World Of Cupcakes & Bakes According to Cookie Girl by Xanthe Milton.
WereGeek recapped and reviewed Being Human (US) s01e06 “It Takes Two To Make A Thing Go Wrong”
Excerpt: I admit I’m still spending a good portion of each episode feeling like I’ve seen it before or going, “That’s the new Becca. That must be the new Nina.” But I’m doing that less and less and enjoying it more and more as the new series comes into its own. I’ve gotten flak from both sides: fans of the original who can’t think anything can be as good as the original and new fans who have only seen the new series and wish I’d quit harping on about the “old” one. To the BBC BH fans I say: it may not have the unquantifiable something the original has, whether that be chemistry, capturing the zeitgeist, whatever, it’s still a good show and it’s getting better – you should have given it more than a week. To Syfy’s fans: yes, I compare it to the original and no matter how impartial I try to be, my love of the original will always be there BUT I’m loving the new series more each week on its own merits and the more it diverges, the fewer direct comparisons there will be.

StrangenessAbounds reviewed Ponyo directed by Hayao Miyazaki
Excerpt: Ponyo (崖の上のポニョ Gake no Ue no Ponyo) is Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, released in 2008 in Japan and 2009 in the United States. Melissa Mathison (of E.T. fame) wrote the American script and she did an excellent job, as I would expect from her. Ponyo is a children’s film, but this doesn’t mean that it isn’t fun to watch, regardless of your age. I found myself laughing throughout much of the film because it was just so darn cute! For me, there is nothing like feasting my eyes on the fantastic art created under Miyazaki in this film. The imagination behind the art is as simple as it is mind-boggling.

TDF Pamela posted about an Interactive Angry Birds Birthday Cake! OMG!
Excerpt: It’s an Angry Birds birthday cake. But even better, it’s playable. Made by the guy who runs ElectricPig.co.uk for the luckiest six year old ever, this is one of the coolest cakes I’ve ever seen.

TDF Pamela posted about an Entertainment Earth’s Dark Horse sale
Excerpt: Are you in desperate need of an adorable Hellboy statue? Or a sexy Bettie Page figure? Need to catch up on your Buffy or B.P.R.D comics? Entertainment Earth has you covered. Click the banner to get 25% off all Dark Horse merchandise!
TDF Pamela reviewed The Mysterious Lady Law by Robert Appleton
Excerpt: The Mysterious Lady Law is a quick and entertaining read, placing a traditional mystery in a steampunk setting. As fair warning, it clocks in around 31,000 words, making it a novella as opposed to a full-length novel, so if you’re reading it expecting a novel, you’ll run into problems that really aren’t problems considering that this book is not a novel. Everything about it is speedy, from the introduction to the mystery set up to the conclusion. I finished it in a couple of hours, and keeping in mind that I was reading a novella, I enjoyed it.

Amanda racapped and reviewed Supernatural s06e15, “The French Mistake”
Excerpt: SO MUCH META! I loved it. I’m a big fan of the previous alternate-reality episodes, like “Changing Channels” and “It’s a Terrible Life”, as well as the regular universe episode when the boys found out about the Supernatural books and fanfic. A lot of people were squicked out at the idea of this episode for various reasons, some even being pissed off that Genevieve was making an appearance as herself, and while I can see why, I never was weirded out in the least. I was excited, especially after seeing the trailer, and the episode did deliver lots of cracky meta awesomeness.

WereGeek racapped and reviewed Being Human s03e02, “Adam’s Family”
Excerpt: Oh so, so, so much wrong on this week’s BBC Being Human! Some good, some not. I figured I’d have to start off with the spoiler warning for this one since there’s pretty much nothing I could say that couldn’t be construed as a spoiler!
Fangirl News
- We’re looking for a few new contributors! We already dabble in comic books and video games, but none of us read comics regularly anymore and just don’t have a lot of time for video game playing. If you would like to contribute regular comic book reviews (any and all titles/companies are needed) and/or reviews of current as well as older video games, send me an email at t.d.fangirl @ gmail.com with your reviewing interests and any previous blogging or reviewing experience you have.
Keep your eyes peeled for more reviews and geeky news this week, and thanks for fangirling with us!
