It’s almost that time of year again – that time when the leaves change color, the disgustingly hot summer weather finally goes away (at least, for those of us in the northern hemisphere), and our favorite TV shows return along with new series. Here at TDF, we have compiled a list of shows that we’re excited to see in the upcoming months. A couple start a little earlier than the standard September time slot, but they are still worth noting.

Garfunkel and Oates – The hilarious singing duo of the same name, starring Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, is coming to IFC in a fictionalized comedy based on their personal and professional lives. Keep an eye out for familiar guest stars like Kumail Nanjiani and Ashley Johnson (AKA, Beth the Waitress from The Avengers). Debuts Thursday, August 7 on IFC.
Outlander – Based on the Diana Gabaldon series, STARZ channel’s Outlander follows the romantic adventure of a combat nurse, Claire Randall, who finds herself transported from 1945 to 1743. After being forced to marry a young Scottish warrior, the already married Claire finds herself becoming torn between both men. Debuts Saturday, August 9 on STARZ.
Doctor Who – The Doctor returns in his latest Peter Capaldi-shaped incarnation late this summer. Clara and The Doctor will be running through the streets of Victorian London and encountering some familiar faces such as Madame Vastra and Strax. The season 8 premiere, “Deep Breath,” will be broadcast in theaters worldwide as well as on BBC One and BBC America on Saturday, August 23.
September
Sons of Anarchy – Following the sixth season finale, it’s safe to say that this final run of the FX biker series is going to be brutal. It picks up ten days after the events of last season with Jax in an incredibly dark place and out for vengeance. At the moment, we have little more than that and a couple eerie teasers. Returns Tuesday, September 10 on FX.

Sleepy Hollow – Abbie and Ichabod are back for another creepy fun season this fall. Producers promise a big season full of surprises, a second Horseman, and the eternal struggle of Ichabod vs. the modern world. The Hollywood Reporter features an exclusive clip wherein Ichabod learns about credit cards and is generally grumpy and adorable. Returns Monday, September 22 on FOX.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Following the events of both the season finale and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the newly appointed director of the now defunct agency S.H.I.E.L.D. finds himself and his team trying to rebuild with limited resources and a severe lack of trust for (or from) anyone. SDCC brought news of Lucy Lawless and a few other new characters joining the cast, including the yet-to-be-cast Bobbi Morse. Returns Tuesday, September 23 on ABC.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine – Back after its hilarious debut, the ensemble cop comedy has made a move to Sunday night. Season two is going to deliver even more laughs and to tie up the loose ends left by the finale, according to the show’s producers. If you haven’t gotten a chance to see the first season, there’s still time between now and the season premiere to get caught up. Returns Sunday, September 28 on FOX.
Once Upon a Time – The addition of Elsa, the Snow Queen, will be explored more in-depth when OUAT comes back for its fourth season. More characters featured in the Disney film Frozen will also join the cast. Returns Sunday, September 28 on ABC.
October
Bob’s Burgers – The Belchers are back to fill our lives with more joy and weirdness this fall. Keep an eye out for Bob’s cameo on The Simpsons’ premiere on September 28th. Returns Sunday, October 5 on FOX.

The Walking Dead – Picking up right where last season left off, The Walking Dead kicks off its fifth season with Rick and the other survivors still stuck in a rail car. The SDCC exclusive trailer gave the hope of seeing Beth again, and executive producer, Gale Anne Hurd promises more action and more tears. Returns Sunday, October 12 on AMC.
Constantine – Based on the comics series of the same name, Constantine centers on demon hunter and master of the dark arts, John Constantine and his fight to protect the innocent. Debuts Friday, October 24 on NBC.
Midseason Premieres/TBA
The BBC Two crime thriller, The Fall, starring Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan, recently aired a second season teaser after wrapping up filming this summer. Rumor has it, the show will return for UK viewers in September, but there is no set premiere date at this time. Hopefully, Netflix will pick up the new season shortly after it airs overseas as they did with the first one.

Gillian’s former X-Files co-star, David Duchovny is also set to play a cop out to catch a dangerous man in the upcoming NBC drama Aquarius. Set in the 1960s, Duchovny will play a Los Angeles police sergeant who goes undercover to catch Charles Manson (played by Game of Thrones actor, Gethin Anthony).
We’re all excitedly waiting for news of the Agent Carter series premiere on ABC because everyone could use some more Peggy in their lives. Following the events of the first Captain America film, the show centers on Agent Peggy and how the original S.H.I.E.L.D. was formed after WWII.
At the Marvel Television panel at SDCC, Jeph Loeb announced that Marvel Studios co-president (and the director of the Agent Carter short film) Louis D’Esposito is set to direct the premiere which will air sometime next year, along with Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo directing the second and third episodes. And the fourth episode, if Loeb gets his way, will be directed by Joe Johnston, the director of Captain America: The First Avenger.
Following last season’s bloody finale, Hannibal’s third season premiere date is still to be announced for NBC. Bryan Fuller isn’t giving away much about the plot yet, just that it will be dealing with the fallout of the last episode and that Lecter and Graham will be taking separate paths. More characters from the Harris’ series will be introduced, including Lady Murasaki and Francis Dollarhyde.

Broad City will return to Comedy Central for a second season, though there still hasn’t been a date announced since its renewal back in February.
