The Bourne Legacy teaser trailer!

February 8, 2012 Movies, Watching 7

Some of us fangirls here at TDF are getting pretty obsessed with Jeremy Renner. Amanda and I texted each other excitedly this morning when this baby dropped:

The Bourne Legacy is the fourth film in the series and is notably the first one without Matt Damon. However, it does have Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, and Ed Norton, so I’m cool with the idea.

The Bourne Legacy

Synopsis: The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

The Bourne Legacy will be released in the U.S. on 3 August 2012.

Hmm… I think I’ll watch this one just to satisfy my curiosity about how they’re going to continue the series without using Bourne as the main character.  Plus, it looks just as action-y as the originals. :)

Since it’s written by the same guy, I’m hopeful that it’ll keep the same tone as the first (though maybe without all of the nauseating shaky-cam work).  And I’m very interested in the idea of expanding the universe.  I mean, there’s only so much crap that can happen to Jason Bourne before it starts to feel contrived, so I like the idea of shifting the focus to someone else in the same program.

Amen. Especially about the camera work. :)

What Janicu said–though I’m going in with lowered expectations, to be honest. There comes a point where stopping is good, you know.

See, that’s why I’m okay with the idea of shifting the story away from Jason Bourne.  At this point, it would just feel like yet another Bad Thing happening to him, and it could easily start feeling contrived.  But by looking at someone else who’s had his life warped by the program, it expands the universe.

Also, Jeremy Renner is a pretty fantastic actor, so I’m not worried about his character.  The writer did the first three movies, too, so hopefully it’ll keep the same quality level (just without Paul Greengrass’s shaky-cam, urk).

There you go, I hadn’t looked at it this way–but yes, it does open possibilities. Not so much a ‘series’ as a ‘shared universe’ kind of thing  (to use a phrase from a Dear Author discussion on romance series vs stand alone titles)

Honestly, with a name like “The Bourne Legacy,” it would seem inappropriate to have Matt Damon involved.
