Young Justice: Geek Girls Get Animated

Posted on 24 January 2011 by Emily

Promotional image for the "Young Justice" TV seriesCartoon Network’s Young Justice premiered in November, but neither of the team’s female heroines were featured. (And honestly, what’s up with that?) In the January 21st episode, “Welcome to Happy Harbor,” dealt with integrating Miss Martian (voiced by Danica McKellar) into the team. Aside from a few annoying choices by the writers (why exactly would she bake cookies for the boys?), the episode was pretty solid. It was very satisfying for me personally when Miss Martian told the boys to leave the field and “hit the showers,” after they had discounted her earlier. McKellar’s Miss Martian is a sweet girl, but she’s still a warrior—same as the boys.

Now we wait to see how the producers introduce the second female lead on the show. Green Arrow’s sidekick, Speedy, has refused to join Young Justice and it seems the team is in need of an archer. Promotional materials indicate that a blonde hero called “Artemis” will fill that role. However, the creators have said that “Artemis” is not Arowette or a female Speedy, but rather another “obscure” character from the DC Universe.

It’s possible that this Artemis is Wonder Woman’s Artemis–since Young Justice was unable to use Wonder Girl for legal reasons. But she is not exactly an “obscure” character. So it’s possible this Artemis is someone new entirely. Or she could be the Female Fury Artemiz without the offensive misspelling (which I would support. Spelling is important.)

I guess we’ll see!

Young Justice airs on Cartoon Network on Fridays at 7 Eastern/6 Central.

At San Diego Comic Con last year, the panel said that Artemis was not Wonder Woman’s Artemis, nor was she Mia (current Speedy) nor was she Cissie (Arrowette) but that she was a character who exists in current day DC comics. I’m very interested to see who she is.

Hmmm, I remember catching the premiere of Young Justice but hadn’t remembered to watch it since. (No cable will do that to you!) But now you’ve got me very intrigued about who Artemis could possibly be in the current DCU? Guess I’ll have to catch up with this to watch.

You shouldn’t have trouble catching up! This is the only episode that aired “new.” The split the premiere into two parts and played those for two weeks, and this is the third.

Thanks for the info about Wonder Woman’s Artemis, Katrina. I had seen interviews with the producers that said she wasn’t Speedy or Arowette but not that she wasn’t WW’s Artemis. I can’t wait to see Black Canary next week. If it’s Dinah Drake or Dinah Lance.

No problem! At that panel, they’d also mentioned that we /would/ eventually see a Wonder Girl but they didn’t say which one. There was also an interview recently that said in the first 24 episodes of the first season (26 episodes total) they had already used 174 different DCU characters. Here’s that article: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2011/01/14/young-justice-tv-series-comics/

I think Miss Martian was baking cookies in an attempt to fit in with regular human society, possibly based primarily on watching TV. She might have gotten stuck on Nick at Nite during a Leave it to Beaver marathon…
