My point on canon was intended more as a notation on context than anything else. There's sufficient difference between pre- and post-reboot Who that, as it's possible to watch one without having seen the other, I felt it worth mentioning that though the recordings are new they take place before the 2005 series.

I don't know if we can "effectively" consider the Big Finish stuff full canon. "Soft Canon" might be the better way of phrasing it. As some Old Whovians have told me, the BBC legally cannot charge for canon material; that's one of the reasons we haven't seen a Doctor Who "in-season" movie in theatres yet. This also allowed the DW show itself to borrow from the audio adventures - the "Family of Blood" two-parter, for instance, was an adaptation of an Eighth Doctor story. I think "The Next Doctor" xmas special was also taken from other media.

Not that any of this makes the audioplays any less fun. Interestingly enough, Paul McGann himself mentioned a new direction for Eight. What do you think of his new costume?
